Frequently Asked Questions
How long do LASIK results last?
The changes made to the cornea at the time of LASIK are considered permanent. However, everyone will eventually undergo a natural age-related stiffening of their natural lens inside the eye which causes the need for reading glasses. In some cases of larger prescriptions, patients may need a quick and easy enhancement procedure to remove any residual prescription. We offer this procedure free of charge within the first year of surgery.
What if I move or blink during the procedure?
The technology used in our state-of-the-art LASIK suite has a robust eye tracking system. This system scans and tracks the eye several thousand times a second for any small movements, to ensure the laser treatment is applied precisely. Your eyelid is gently held open using a speculum during this short time of laser treatment.
Does LASIK treat astigmatism?
Yes! Regular astigmatism can easily be treated just as well as nearsightedness or farsightedness. Astigmatism means your eye is shaped more like a football (oblong) instead of spherical like a basketball. During your consultation you will have an advanced corneal scan that will highlight every aspect of your cornea for a completely customized treatment plan.
Is LASIK safe?
LASIK is one of the most widely studied elective procedures available today. There is a large body of clinical research supporting its impressive record for safety and effectiveness. Every patient should have a thorough examination by a qualified and experienced surgeon to ensure LASIK is right for their eyes. For those not eligible for LASIK, there are other methods of vision correction available that may be safer options for their individual eyes.
What is recovery like?
LASIK recovery is relatively quick and easy! The day of your procedure you will have anesthetic drops, but after they wear off, you may have some temporary burning, watering and light sensitivity. This usually resolves in a few hours with vision improving incrementally each passing hour! Surgery is on a Friday, so plan for a light weekend, but most patients are back to work Monday!
Are there age limits for LASIK?
While many factors determine candidacy other than age, a few general guidelines do apply. Most patients are not candidates until age 18, or when the body has matured enough to have a stable prescription that doesn't fluctuate. Generally, you are still considered a candidate for LASIK up until late 40's or early 50's with the understanding that presbyopia (needing readers) begins around that age and cannot be corrected with LASIK. However, other vision correction procedures (like Refractive Lens Exchange) can correct for presbyopia and are worth considering and talking to your surgeon about!
